What is Amoxicillin and why is it prescribed?
Amoxicillin is used to treat gonorrhea, middle ear infections, skin infections, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, infections of the genital and urinary tract and a wide variety of other infections. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic.
Amoxicillin also prevents infection before some surgery or dental work. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
Amoxicillin is also used occasionally to treat a chlamydia infection during pregnancy. In combination with other drugs such as Prevacid and Biaxin, it is also used to treat duodenal ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria (ulcers in the wall of the small intestine near the exit from the stomach).
